Ildibad

Hildebad ( Ildibad or Heldebadus ) ( † 541 ) was a king ostgotischer.

Hildebad was a nephew of the Visigoth king Theudis. As the previous Ostrogoth Witiges had been captured in May 540 by the Eastern Roman generals Belisarius in Ravenna and brought to Constantinople Opel (see Gothic war ), where those Ostrogoths, who would not be with the defeat resign, after some time Hildebad to their new king, though he did not belong to the race of the Amali, and therefore actually had no claim to the throne.

Hildebad not even reigned one year, until he was murdered in a palace banquet of a Gepids. His immediate successor was Erarich, but this also could govern only a few months. He then followed Hildebads Totila nephew on the throne, the last major Ostrogoth. Literally, he is one of the heroes in Felix Dahn's novel, A Struggle for Rome.
