Ílhavo is a city ( Cidade ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal is located in the district of Aveiro, north of the Centro region.

History

Ílhavos history is closely connected with the sea. Probably from 1372 BC, Phoenicians, Greeks, and probably northern European Sea Peoples are first sailed into the mouth of the Rio Vouga in and there have first settlements built. Later wrong here also Romans. The fishermen of Ílhavo turn as founder of several localities ( eg Cova - Gala at Figueira da Foz ) apply. Today's local name first appears as a villa iliauo in writings of the cathedral ( Sé ) of Coimbra, which date from the years 1037 to 1065, after the final reconquest from the Moors.

The exact founding of the circle Ílhavo there are no documents. In 1095 he already was. The city received city rights for the first time ( Foral ) of King D.Dinis in 1296.

1824 here the Vista Alegre factory was founded, which became famous for its glass - and porcelain - making. In the course of various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution of 1822 independent county Ílhavo was confirmed in 1836, but despite the protests of its citizens dissolved in 1895, and connected Aveiro. After incessant efforts of the county in 1898 was restored.

In consequence of its development, the existing small town ( Vila ) Ílhavo was raised in 1990 to the city ( Cidade ). 2001 Gafanha da Nazaré city as well, but remained a municipality of the district Ílhavo.

Culture and sights

The nationally and internationally well-known attraction for visitors is the museum and the historic factory site of Vista Alegre porcelain factory. The sandy beaches are a major attraction, especially on the Costa Nova with the characteristic colorful wooden houses.

Ílhavo part of speech Nacional de Municipio Arte Nova, a group of places in Portugal, by particularly numerous and striking buildings in the Art Nouveau: distinguished (Portuguese Arte Nova ). Among the best known examples in Ílhavo include various townhouses, such as the ornate Villa Africana.

The Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo dedicated to the regional fishing and marine history. So there can be seen the last completely preserved towing fishing vessel of cod fishing fleet.

Historically, the arte xávega was an important form of fishing anywhere on the Portuguese coast, and especially in the local region. Here were applied from the beach nets to the sea and drawn with the aid of Ochsengespännen ashore. Even today this species is occasionally practiced here, and is considered a tourist attraction.
