Ilja Hurník

Ilya Hurník ( born November 25, 1922 in Poruba, † September 7, 2013 ) was a Czech composer and pianist.

Life

Hurník studied at the Prague Conservatory piano with Vilém Kurz and composition with Vítězslav Novák and at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague by Ilona Štěpánová - Kurzova. In the 1960s, he appeared increasingly as a concert pianist. Since 1970, he taught at the Prague Conservatory and 1974 to 1979 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava.

He composed five operas and two ballets, a symphony, a string concerto, a concerto for brass and timpani, an oboe concerto, a concerto for oboe, harpsichord and strings, chamber works, three organ sonatas, piano pieces, songs and song cycles, an oratorio, a fair and several cantatas.

In addition, he also emerged as a librettist and author of short stories and an autobiography. His son Lukáš Hurník is also a composer.
