Illy

Illycaffè SpA is a global company that operates in the areas of coffee production and distribution, specializing in the manufacture and worldwide distribution of coffee for espresso production.

The company, with headquarters in Via Flavia 110 in the northeastern Italian port city of Trieste was established in 1933 by the Hungarian-born merchant Francesco Illy coffee and belongs to the family holding company Gruppo Illy SpA.

History

Francesco Illy (* 1892 as Illy Ferenc in Timisoara, † 1956 in Trieste ) was among other things, a product developer and constructed the so-called Illy Illetta, an apparatus which is considered the forerunner of all the usual espresso machines today. With the patented inert-gas, he managed to preserve the commercial manufacture of coffee while retaining all the flavors and ingredients. Ernesto Illy ( b. 1925 in Trieste, † 2008 ibid ) was a professional chemist, joined after his graduation in the company, which he led as president from 1963 to 2004.
