Aeropuerto de Ilopango is a military airfield and air force base Fuerza Armada de El Salvador.

Location

He is in the midst of residential areas of the city Ilopango, about ten kilometers east of the capital San Salvador. The Carretera Panamericana N º 1 crosses through an underpass, the start and runway of the airfield.

History

In 1923, the military airfield was opened. During the ethnocide in 1932 flew from here military aircraft to bomb indigenous. Until the opening of the Aeropuerto Internacional de El Salvador in 1970, the military airfield was also used for the scheduled air service.

Due to the increasing development and urban expansion, a further expansion of the airfield was no longer possible for security reasons. The airfield is currently mainly used only for military and restricted civil aviation operations by small aircraft. Scheduled air services no longer takes place since the opening of the new airport. 2001 gave the military airfield to the operating organization Commision Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma.

Part of the military facility is used by the Museo Militar de la Fuerza Armada de El Salvador. At the airfield is also the headquarters of the Autoridad de Aviación Civil is ( Civil Aviation Authority ). Since 1929, the airfield is also home to the aviation community Club de Aviación Civil y Reserva de El Salvador.

Events

Every year for 15 years, mostly on the last weekend of January, the Ilopango Air Show at the air base instead.
