Ilse Fromm-Michaels

Ilse Fromm- Michaels ( born December 30, 1888 in Hamburg, † January 22, 1986 in Detmold ) was a German composer and pianist.

Life

Fromm was already playing piano as a child and began her training at age 13 at the Royal Academy of Music in Berlin. At the Stern Conservatory, she studied piano with James Kwast and composition with Hans Pfitzner.

In 1915 she married the lawyer Walter Michaels.

1934 their Marien- op Passion was performed in 18 Reichssender Hamburg, shortly after she was allowed as a wife of a man of Jewish origin neither occur nor were their works are performed. During the Third Reich, therefore, she concentrated on composing. During this time, their symphony originated in C minor (Op. 19, 1938) and Musica larga for Clarinet and Strings ( 1944).

Walter Michaels, who had the Nazi era traumatized barely survived, died shortly after the war. Fromm- Michaels was appointed in 1945 at the Hamburg Musikhochschule. 1946 their symphony by Hans Schmidt- Isserstedt was premiered with the orchestra of NWDR and found wide recognition in the criticism.

Fromm- Michaels composed until 1949 and then worked exclusively as a professor and music teacher in Hamburg. In 1963 she was awarded the Johannes-Brahms- Medal of the City of Hamburg. She died at the age of 97 years in a retirement home in Detmold.
