Ilya Shumov

Ilya Stepanovich Schumow (Russian Илья Степанович Шумов, scientific transliteration Ilya Stepanovic Šumov; * 16 Junijul / June 28 1819greg in Arkhangelsk. . † July 1881 in Sevastopol ) was a Russian chess master and composer.

Schumow, who was for 18 years an officer in the Russian Baltic Fleet until 1847, began an intensive care of chess after he had taken his service in the Navy Department in Saint Petersburg. Within a short time he counted alongside Alexander Petrov and Carl Jaenisch Ferdinand to the best chess players in Russia.
