Image file formats

A graphics format is a file format that describes the structure of an image file.

There are numerous graphic formats, of which only a few were able to implement a large scale. Many graphic formats are supported by only a few applications.

There are both graphic formats for raster and vector graphics. Some raster graphics formats support image compression.

Image Information

Many graphic formats store information about the image. These include camera data such as shutter speed or aperture automatically generated information such as date or recording coordinates, and text fields to describe the image content.

Examples:

The JPEG File Interchange Format for Digital Photos provides an image - text comment field (COM) and a text box for user rights ( APP14 ). If JPG images are nested (preview ), the text fields can occur more than once. Usually put digital cameras no information in JPG from text fields, but choose the Exif standard.

Exchangeable Image File Format is a standard format for the storage of metadata in digital images, which use particular digital film cameras into JPEG files. There are technical data for inclusion, such as camera make and model, lens type, focal length, recording time or GPS data. As text fields, it provides: Author, Description ( only ASCII characters), User Commen ( choice of format possible Unicode ) and copyright.

Some technical and substantive inconsistencies of trying to fix the Exif IPTC -NAA standard. Unlike Exif especially information about image content, the persons involved in the imaging and instructions for the use of the image are recorded, but no camera-specific data such as shutter speed or focal length.

In particular, by the advent of proprietary raw image files was the problem benutzerfeundlich store description data. The Extensible Metadata Platform format writes the data no longer in the image file, but in its own XML - based text file. Except for the file extension it has the same name as the source file and can be processed by image archiving programs.
