Imeľ

Imeľ (Hungarian Imely - older even Imöl etc. ) is a city and a municipality in Okres Komárno of Nitriansky kraj in southwestern Slovakia, with 2046 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The population is mixed, according to the 2001 census, with a brief Slovak majority ( 52.04 %), followed by Hungary ( 46.52 %), plus a few Czechs come (0.58 %).

Geography

Imeľ is located in the Slovak Danube lowland between the rivers Stara Nitra (old course of Nitra ) in the west and in the east Žitava, 10 kilometers south of Nové Zámky and 20 kilometers north of Komárno located.

History

The territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic. From the archaeological finds mainly finds from the Early Bronze Age, during the Migration Period and the ancient Hungarian tribes are represented. The present town was first mentioned in 1312 as Hemeu and for a long time to the archbishopric of Gran during the Turkish wars in the 16th and 17th century, the city was several times on the front and was affected.

Until 1919 part of which is in the county Komárom place the Kingdom of Hungary and was then Czechoslovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Award, it was 1938-45 again in Hungary.
