Imereti (Georgian იმერეთი, Imereti; completely იმერეთის მხარე, Imeretis Mchare ) is a region of Georgia. It is located on the middle reaches of the river Rioni and is bordered to the west by Samegrelo and Guria, on the north by Racha - Letschchumi and Niederswanetien, to the east by Inner Kartli and Samtskhe - Javakheti to the south. Its capital is Kutaisi.

History

Imereti has long been part of Colchis and later Lasika. Smaller areas in the east were also among Iberia. After the invasion of the Arabs in the Caucasus region was divided Lasika, and Imereti was part Egrisis, which was later united with Abkhazia.

975 it became part of the united Georgian Kingdom. 1466 it became independent again, and formed one of the three Georgian kingdoms.
