An impact damper is a passive protection device usually made of metal ( steel), but also of plastic. Crash cushions are designed to reduce the severity of head-on or offset some accidents. They are used when danger spots ( non-deformable obstacles such as bridge piers or noise barriers) are between major and minor roadways and at motorway junctions at the beginning of the guardrail or concrete barrier.

Chance of security vehicles are used with crash cushions at the stern for securing worksites.
