Imphal is the capital of the Indian state of Manipur. It is the administrative seat of the district of Imphal West and has about 265,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

Imphal lies in a valley and is surrounded by forested mountains. The city's airport ( IATA code: IMF; Lage24.759793.8969 ) has connections to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Aizawl.

Imphal has a university. In the town are the ruins of the Palace of Kangla and there are several monuments commemorating the Second World War. The Manipur State Museum is presenting an exhibition objects and images from the history of the state of Manipur. Particularly worth seeing is a market in the city center, on the only women hawking their wares.
