In the Wee Small Hours is a concept album by Frank Sinatra from the year 1955. The vocal jazz album is regarded as one of the first concept albums ever. The album continued after his show at the top of the Billboard 200

The ballads album was arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle; next to a frugal busy rhythm section with piano, celesta, bass and drums strings are used. It is considered one of the jazz- lastigsten works Sinatra. The songs are mostly melancholic and sad; they act as a processing shortly before failed marriage Sinatra with actress Ava Gardner.

The eponymous song In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning has been widely gecovert since the release, for example by Johnny Hartman, Astrud Gilberto, Lou Rawls, Carly Simon, Art Blakey, Count Basie, Andy Williams, Wes Montgomery, Ruby Braff, Jamie Cullum and John Mayer.

Recording

The recordings for the album took place on the 8th, 16th, and 17 February and 4 March 1955 in accordance with the album title in the early hours of the morning. A select audience lived in the recordings and provided the desired "night club " atmosphere.

Reception

In The Wee Small Hours 1984 was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame. The magazine Rolling Stone led the work in 2003 among the 500 best albums of all time. Was honored Likewise In The Wee Small Hours by Time Magazine. There the album in the list The ALL- TIME 100 Albums is performed. Robert Dimery discusses the album in the first place in his book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
