Indene (stress on the last syllable: indene ) is a colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is one of the arenas. The name was formed in 1888 by Roser from Indonaphthen.

Representation and extraction

Indene is produced by coal tar distillation. In addition, it results from the heating of acetylene of air.

Properties

Indene, especially 2H- indene, polymerized in air at room conditions or exposure to light. Therefore 2H -indene exists only in the form of its derivatives. It smells aromatic, the odor threshold is 0.07 to 0.32 mg/m3. Indene is flammable, flash point is 79 ° C. In water it is insoluble. A MAK value is not set for indene. Indene reacts violently with oxidants and nitration runs explosive.

Use

The liquid is used as the solvent and for the preparation of other organic compounds, and indene-coumarone resins. Indene plays also as a complex of transition metals in homogeneous catalysis important. It is a starting material for azulene.
