Indonesian mountain weasel

The Indonesian mountain weasel (Mustela lutreolina ) is a predatory species of the marten family ( Mustelidae ).

Features

The animals have to the elongated body and short legs the usual physique of weasel. They reach a body length 30-32 cm, a tail length of 14 to 17 centimeters and a weight of 295-340 grams. In their physique they resemble the closely related fire weasel, but have a darker, usually reddish-brown fur.

Circulation area and way of life

Indonesian mountain weasels are known only from the island of Java and southern Sumatra. Their habitat are mountainous regions of 1000-2200 meters above sea level. Very little is known about their way of life, one suspects that it largely coincides with that of the fire weasel. Like these, they are likely to be nocturnal loner and feed primarily on small mammals and other carnal food.

Stock

Since its first description a total of only eleven copies of the Indonesian mountain weasel were found. These discoveries were made in regions that are partially affected by human settlement activities and land clearing, so the species is IUCN as endangered ( endangered ).
