Infanta Maria Josepha of Portugal

Maria José Bragança (Portuguese: Dona Beatriz Maria José Joana Eulalia Leopoldina Adelaide Isabel Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Carolina Francisca de Assis e de Paula Inês Sofia Joaquina Teresa Benedita Bernardina de Bragança ) ( born March 19, 1857 in Bronnbach on the Tauber; † 11 March 1943 in Munich) was a Infanta of Portugal.

Life

Maria José was a daughter of Portuguese King Michael I and his wife, the Princess Adelaide of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg. They married on April 29, 1874 Duke Karl Theodor in Bavaria, a brother of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth.

1880 joined Duke Karl Theodor his medical studies in Munich with the state examination and the grade " very good". He specialized in ophthalmology and therefore an intern extended period of time with the professors Ferdinand von Arlt in Vienna and Johann Friedrich Horner in Zurich. For 15 years, practiced the Duke alternately in Munich, and at the Tegernsee in Merano. This eventually led to the decision, together with his wife to purchase the property Munich Nymphenburgerstraße 43. His wife, who supported from the beginning her husband in his medical profession, advised him to start his own eye clinic. Here especially destitute eye disorders should be treated free of charge. They thus established Duke Karl Theodor and his wife Maria Josepha of Portugal in 1895, the Eye Clinic as a " charitable institution for indigent sick eyes ." The acquisition, reconstruction and operation of the clinic was funded from their personal assets.

Died in 1909 Duke Karl Theodor. José Maria survived him by more than 30 years and died on 11 March 1943 at 85 years. She is buried in the grave chapel in Tegernsee Castle.
