Inferior hypogastric plexus

The inferior hypogastric plexus is a network of vegetative nerve fibers to supply the viscera of the pelvis. The plexus contains both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers and communicates with the abdominal aortic plexus and the superior hypogastric plexus in conjunction. From the latter, the fibers enter the inferior hypogastric both sides via the hypogastric nerves plexus. The switchover to the second neuron of the sympathetic fibers are inferior hypogastric plexus not only in, but also partly in the inferior mesenteric ganglion.

From the inferior hypogastric plexus go from nerve fibers that run with the blood vessels and make more braids to the pelvic viscera. Specifically, these are:

  • The rectal plexus and inferior medii: supply of the rectum
  • The prostatic plexus: supply of the prostate
  • Plexus deferential: Supply of the vas deferens
  • Plexus uterovaginalis: supply of uterus and vagina
  • The vesical plexus: the fundus of the bladder
