Inga edulis

Inga is a genus of plants of the family of the mimosa family ( Mimosoideae ) within the legume family ( Fabaceae ). It includes about 350 species of small to large trees that are common in the tropics and subtropics.

Features

It is in species of this genus are small to large trees. Its leaves are pinnate and consist of two to numerous leaflets. Between each pair of leaflets along the rachis are clearly visible glands. The stipules are either small and frail or significantly larger and more permanent.

The flowers have numerous long stamens. The fruits are flat, quadrangular or nearly cylindrical to cylindrical, straight to curved or spirally screwed legumes, whose surface is leathery woody to approximate. The seeds are embedded in white pith.

Dissemination

Inga are tropical or subtropical plants occurring worldwide. In Central and South America, they are often alone in Costa Rica, there are 66 species.
