Inishark

Inishark or Inishshark ( Irish: Inis Airc; German: " island of the sea monster " ) is a small, uninhabited since 1960 island off the west coast of Ireland in County Galway. The treeless island is less than 1000 meters west of the larger neighboring island of Inishbofin.

1841, the island had still 208 inhabitants, and before the evacuation in 1960 26 The last families were moved to Fountain Hill near Claddaghduff. A house is still used by fishermen. At the berth is a small cemetery. More than 6000 years ago the first people came to the island.

Description

The island is 2.6 kilometers long from east to west, and a maximum of 1.4 km wide, with an area of 2.49 km ².

Attractions

  • St. Leo's Chapel is an abandoned chapel from the 19th century, which was built on the former chapel " Teampaill Leo", which is associated with the saint of the island. In Leo 's Cove or Leo Fo (Fo denotes a small bay ) is a sacred source.
  • Clochan Leo, a ruined stone hut with traces of a circular containment is attributed to the saints " Leaba Leo". The bed or grave of the saint appears to be northeast of the hut of the small hill.
  • A destroyed Clochan was the small bay fo Chlochain the name. Near here is "Poll ant tSéidte " one blowhole.
  • In Duinin traces can be found of a Promontory Forts.
  • " Aill to Chlai " at the southwest end of Inishark is an approximately 460 m long wall, between the caves " Aill na nUibheacha " on the northwest side and " FO Duilisc " in the southeast, which cuts off the southwest end of the island. It originally consisted of an approximately four meters wide rampart, who was blinded with a dry stone wall and was covered later with stones. There are more periodic hut trails in the area of the wall and a ditch. While the stone cover could date from the 19th century, the original Wall is probably derived from a Promontory Fort An old field system lies in the southwest.
