Inrō

An inro (印 笼Japanese, German "seal container ") is a seal or medicine box from Japan and is one of the so-called Sagemono ( " hanging things ").

It consists of several stacked departments that are working so exact that they close almost airtight. The uppermost part acts as a lid. Inro may be made of very hard wood, horn, ivory or ceramic. Originally, the inro was designed as a container for messages that were with time in coins, kept the personal seal or medicine on the go. He was mainly used by men whose clothes as opposed to the women usually had no sleeve pockets. For this he was attached to the cord on Obi and against secured with the netsuke.
