Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen

The Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen ( Institute for the Protection and the Security of the Citizen, IPSC ) is one of the seven institutes of the Joint Research Centre, a Directorate General of the European Commission. It has its headquarters in Ispra, Italy.

The Institute supports the decision of the European Union in a very broad topic that covers global security, global crisis management, maritime and fisheries policies, monitoring of agricultural supply, the protection of critical infrastructure security and nuclear safety. In these areas, the Institute also undertakes statistical studies. It relies on engineering and information technology skills, these include the analysis of satellite imagery, structural mechanics, risk assessment and nuclear safety.

The institute has about 500 employees (as of 2008) and is directed by Stephan Lechner.
