The Inter- American Defense Board ( IADB, dt Inter-American Defense Board ) is an international organization of representatives of national military authorities from North, South and Central America in Washington, DC

It organizes the " collective self-defense in the Western Hemisphere with peace and security as its main objective " (mission) and serves the technical support of the Organization of American States. The OAS also funds the Committee ( annual budget of U.S. $ 2 million, 1999), which is administrated by the U.S. military.

History

In 1938 the U.S. military missions in Latin America for the purpose of training and guidance of national military authorities to encounter fascist subversion. In return, granted, except for Argentina and Panama, all Latin American countries, the U.S. Air Force and Navy military bases and transit rights. To coordinate military cooperation " Inter- American Defense Board " common defense committees with Mexico and Brazil were formed on 30 March 1942 at the so-called.

During the Cold War, the U.S. was planning a worldwide anti-Communist security system. Per available (executive order) of 26 March 1951, the IADB was raised to the public, international organization.

With the government takeover Eisenhower's 1953 plans to enforce economic, political and military objectives of the U.S. in Latin America have been developed. These provided for the involvement of the UN and other international organizations in the U.S. policy, military equipment, standardization, economic development and elimination of communist or anti-American subversion.

Shortly before the U.S. steered Jacobo Arbenz coup against Guatemalan Guzmán an anti-Communist resolution was adopted on the " Caracas Conference" in 1954, the omnibus national security programs in Latin America, the U.S. doctrine. Many U.S. institutions such as the National Security Council, DOD, USAID, CIA and the Foreign Operations Administration were involved in the implementation of the objectives. As a result of the joint conference in 1962 Cuba was excluded from the IADB at the suggestion of John F. Kennedy and decision. Canada joined the Organization in 2002.

1962 for training purposes, the Inter- American Defense College ( IADC ) in " Fort Lesley J. McNair ," Washington DC was founded. In a 11 -month program Altmilitärs and government officials of the participating countries are trained here.

The manager of the IADB from 1975-1978, General Gordon Sumner, was violently opposed the return of the Panama Canal by Jimmy Carter. The dispute later led to the U.S. invasion of Panama (1989).

IADB lends since 1945 the award " Inter- American Defense Board Medal" to employees and graduates of the college courses, similar to the NATO Medal.
