Inter-American Development Bank

The Inter-American Development Bank ( IDB) (sometimes IADB, in Spanish and Portuguese BID) is a multilateral development bank in legal form of a corporation. The IADB was founded by 19 U.S. states, including the United States. In 1977, the Republic of Austria has been a member of the IADB, the Federal Republic of Germany joined it in 1979 and holds a share of 1.9 % (as of September 2004). The bank is majority of Member States from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Organization and activities

To simplify the following legal entities are usually summarized under the name IADB ( " IADB Group"):

  • The Inter-American Development Bank ( IADB ), founded in 1959, including the Fund for Special Operations ( FSO )
  • The Inter-American Investment Corporation ( IIC), founded in 1986
  • The Multilateral Investment Fund ( MIF), followed in 1993

According to the German Federal Government (September 2004) is the IADB for years the largest multilateral lender to Latin America and the Caribbean - even before the World Bank.

At the top of the bank is an Executive Committee ( Board of Governors ), which monitors the activities of the Executive Committee ( Board of Executive Directors ). A management team is responsible for current operations. The President of the IADB is elected for five years by the Governing. He leads the business operations of the Bank. Since 2005, Luis Alberto Moreno held the office of President; he was re-elected in 2010 for five years. The Executive Vice President ( EVP, EVP ) is elected by the Executive Committee ( Board of Executive Directors ) and monitors the operational departments of the Bank.

The Vice President for Planning and Administration ( Vice President for Planning and Administration, VPO) on the other hand monitors all departments with planning and auxiliary tasks. The various areas of the bank are each a segment manager (manager), his deputy, and various department heads ( division chiefs ) out.

The Statutes of the Bank allow only since the 1970s, the membership of non-US countries. In addition to Germany, Austria and other European countries as the " donor" and the United States, Canada, Japan, Switzerland and Israel are involved.
