The Interlaken West railway station is named after the Interlaken Ost station of the smaller of the two stations of the Berne community Interlaken. It is located on the Lake Thun Railway and is served by regional trains plus also of all long-distance trains, which lead to Interlaken Ost, including Intercity and ICE - trains. The station is owned by the BLS, but is also served by trains of the SBB.

History

The station was opened as Interlaken during the first stage of the Bödelibahn on 12 August 1872. Nearly two years later, the sequel followed over Interlaken Customs House (now Interlaken Ost ) to Bönigen. The main reason for this railway construction was to be bridged distance between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in Interlaken.

1893 leased the Lake Thun Railway during its opening from Thun to Interlaken Ost Bödelibahn and took it completely in 1900.

With the opening of the Bernese Oberland Railway Interlaken customs house was more important than Interlaken, therefore, the two stations were renamed: Interlaken, Interlaken West, Interlaken Customs House at Interlaken Ost. Although Interlaken Ost had gotten even with the Brünigbahn further growth, the SBB - distance trains towards Bern continue to hold also in the Interlaken West. Thus Interlaken is just under 5500 inhabitants, the smallest municipality in Switzerland, which has two regularly serviced by the long-distance train stations. The other communities with several long-distance train stations are Basel (SBB and Bad Bf ), Zurich (HB, Oerlikon, Altstetten ), St. Gallen ( St. Gallen and St. Fiden ) and Grenchen ( North and South).

At times possessed the station on three tracks, but today there are only two. Instead of the third track Park & Ride sites have been created. 2007 accounted for due to new train paths after the opening of the Lötschberg base tunnel, the two hourly intercity direct trains to Zurich HB, they are led instead to Basel.
