International Cultivar Registration Authority

An International Cultivar Registration Authority ( ICRA short ) is a person appointed by the International Society for Horticultural Science department which compliance with the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants ( ICNCP ), which regulates the uniform naming of cultivated varieties, supervised.

Work

Crops are to be clearly identifiable by their names, this requires the communication between growers, garden trade and plant lovers, even across national and linguistic boundaries. This should make the ICRA.

If a proposal is submitted for a new name, the competent ICRA will examine whether the new name was previously used and whether it is consistent with the rules of the ICNCP. At the end of the process, the applicant will receive a decision on the name. Examples of ICRA are:

  • The Royal Horticultural Society for Lily
  • The International Carnivorous Plant Society ( ICPS ) for Carnivorous Plants
  • The American Violet Society ( AVS) for pansies
