International Encyclopedia of Human Geography

The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography is a book published by Elsevier in 2009 academic reference work on human geography. The chief editors are Rob Kitchin and Nigel Thrift. It includes a foreword by Mary Robinson. The encyclopedia has been published in a print edition ( 12 volumes, 8250 pages) and in an online edition.

Controversy

The Enzykoplädie was even before its release to the subject of controversy, as a subsidiary company called Spearhead Exhibitions of Elsevier's parent company Reed Elsevier for exhibiting worked for the defense industry. As a result of a campaign that was coordinated by the mailing list crit - geog -forum and aimed at a perceived conflict of interest between the arms trade and academic publishing, Reed Elsevier announced on 1 June 2007 to retire in the second half of this year from the defense industry.
