International Material Data System

With IMDS (English for International Material Data System; German International Material Data System) an archive, exchange and management system for the automotive industry is referred to. At its base is a material data sheet is created in which all the materials used and prorated material components are named for the component concerned and all necessary data are recorded, which are necessary for subsequent recycling of the vehicle part.

IMDS affects vehicle category M1 (passenger cars) and N1 ( commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes ) and is used only as an alternative to other products. The database was developed jointly by Audi, BMW, Daimler, Chrysler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo. More car manufacturers are now joined this system. As a partner for the Internet -based platform EDS (now HP ) found in Rüsselsheim. IMDS is realized by a central database based on Unix, to allow the car manufacturers and suppliers real- time access to the material data sheets.

The aim of the IMDS system is to meet the national and international legislation, which automotive manufacturers and suppliers through standards and legal regulations, in particular in the environmental subject. Each vehicle manufacturer and supplier is responsible for all aspects of its product and the entire life cycle of production, use, recycling and disposal. Furthermore, the manufacturers are required to provide data on the material composition of the products used in automobiles in order to reconstruct the original material composition and classified in risk levels. Car manufacturers thus have a need for information on the composition of the components used their products.

With the help of a material data sheet this information is collected at the component level.

The main demand of the automobile manufacturers is to be able to summarize and analyze all data of a material data sheet, a component of an assembly, module, and an entire automobile. This is possible through targeted evaluation and the grouping of the individual material data sheets of the IMDS.

The MDB are protected against outside access and manipulation. Access to the IMDS is limited, also the system itself is protected against unauthorized access from the outside.

The International Material Data System is based, among other things, to the requirements of Directive 2000/53/EC on end- and the German ELV. The ELV Directive obliged the vehicle industry until January 1, 2006, to supply at least 85 percent of the average vehicle weight, the recovery and recycling. Until 1 January 2015, at least 95 percent of the average vehicle weight, the recovery and recycling are to be fed.

For the IMDS, all materials a classification according to VDA must be assigned to 231-106.

The IMDS underlying list of the world would require disclosure in automotive fabrics GADSL is an instrument for the communication of prohibited substances in the materials and serves simultaneously as a basis for control of the release of the material data sheet for each component by the carmaker in question.
