International Mine Water Association

The International Mine Water Association ( IMWA English, abbreviated German: International Association of pit water ) was the first scientific- technical association world, which dealt exclusively with questions of mine drainage water.

History

It was founded in 1979 in Granada / Spain. As of the date of the founding questions of mining safety related to water in the foreground, so the focus has shifted to the solution of environmental problems over the years. From the beginning it was the aim of IMWA, to promote contacts between scientists, miners, engineers and students. Therefore, the IMWA held every three years, a conference on mine water and in intervening years symposia that deal with the same question. In 2008, found themselves at the 10th Congress IMWA 232 delegates from 40 nations in Karlovy Vary / Czech Republic together.

Publications

Since 1982, the IMWA are the "Journal of the International Mine Water Association " out; In 1994 she was renamed " Mine Water and the Environment". The magazine is printed ( ISSN 1025-9112 ) and electronically ( ISSN 1616-1068 ) by Springer -Verlag Heidelberg. It is a quarterly sent to about 600 subscribers worldwide.

Furthermore, the book series " Mining and the Environment" is published since 2008, which is also published by Springer -Verlag. The first volume deals with Grubenwasseramanagement and tracer tests, the second, scheduled for 2011 band, acidic mining lakes will have to content.

Membership structure

In 2010, the International Mine Water Association 522 members from 40 nations with two local working groups in Europe ( PADRE ) and North America. Between 1997 and 2010 the number of members grew, steadily to 70, reflecting the increasing importance of water in mining and above all the environmental relevance of the topic. Most of their members has in North America and Europe, followed by Australia, the IMWA.
