Historical

The International Office of Vine and Wine - the predecessor of the OIV - was founded on 29 November 1924 by France, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Hungary, Luxembourg and Greece to spread the alleged positive effects of wine consumption, and on quality standards in the production to respect and to coordinate nomenclature and research. The first congress came into existence in 1874 in Montpellier, since this year the phylloxera destroyed large parts of the European wine industry and a common solution for the fight against it should be found. It was not until 35 years later, in 1908 and 1909, two more conferences were held ( in Geneva and Paris ), because in these years the phylloxera more times ravaged the European continent and because the extent of counterfeit wine had greatly increased. The eventual establishment of the OIV came about through the signing of the international agreement in Paris.
