International Reference Ionosphere

International Reference Ionosphere, IRI abbreviated, since 1968 /69, a joint scientific project of the International Union of Radio Science ( URSI ) and the Committee on Space Research ( COSPAR ).

IRI was declared in 1999 to the international standard for the ionosphere. Founder and first chairman was Karl Rawer, which laid down a guideline that IRI should be based on obtained by measurement, verifiable data. Divergent results of different measurement methods ( in space and from the ground ) to a critical examination had to undergo.

History

In annual meetings at COSPAR and URSI meetings grew to 1977 zoom an international working group. From the data it has collected a first, preliminary set of height profiles created in 1978 fewer parameters. A more comprehensive edition followed in 1979.
