International Safety Management Code

The ISM Code ( International Safety Management Code, complete International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention ) in 1993 by the International Maritime Organization International Maritime Organization ( IMO) adopted. Since 1 July 1998 it is compulsory for all vessels in international shipping. It is designed in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea ( SOLAS), Chapter IX.

The code lays down measures for the Safe Operation of Ships and requires that each ship owner, any other person, whether manager or charterer, or company that operates a ship, for precisely that a so-called " Safety Management System" ( SMS) to has to submit.

It is then the task pane of the Company to implement those specified in this code, procedures and goals with the help of a suitable internal strategy and to review the implementation as well. Regularly this is done by the introduction of procedures and checklists should be filled on board. For this purpose, a " Designated Person Ashore " named in each shipping company (DPA ), which should have direct access to senior management.

All required by the ISM Code procedures are documented and in the Safety Management Manual, a copy of which must be on board, collected.
