International Seabed Authority

The International Seabed Authority (English International Seabed Authority) is an international organization based in Kingston ( Jamaica). It was founded in 1994 by the Convention of the United Nations; founded ( UNCLOS United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ). Part XI of the Convention regulates the establishment of the Authority (see in particular Article 156 UNCLOS).

Order

Its mission is to manage mineral resources of the deep sea as a " common heritage of mankind". On 13 July 2000, the International Seabed Authority has the deep-sea mining of Conduct for the prospecting and exploration of polymetallic nodules (see: manganese nodules ) adopted. The superposed on the seabed tubers contain, in addition, especially manganese cobalt, copper and nickel. In the 1970s and 1980s, Knoll deposits have been studied extensively. Due to increased recycling and because of the substitution of those substances and new finds in Australia and Canada, it was ultimately not for exploration. Add to that required for deep-sea mining technologies are still very expensive.

Organs

The Authority consists of an Assembly, a Council, a Secretariat, a Legal and Technical Commission, a Finance Committee and a party to the economic exploitation of the seabed " corporate authorities ", see Article 158 UNCLOS.
