International Spinal Cord Society

The International Spinal Cord Society ( ISCOS, formerly IMSoP ) is a global non-profit organization that deals with all the problems associated with damage to the spinal cord.

History

Sir Ludwig Guttmann in 1948 initiated in Stoke Mandeville, the " Stoke Mandeville Games" for the disabled, which took place from then parallel to the Olympics. 1952 already participated 130 athletes from different countries. 1960 were in Rome from the Paralympic Games, which take place since after the Olympics in the same city. In 1955, doctors from various countries, who accompanied their teams to the Games began to meet to discuss their clinical work and research. This resulted in 1961, the International Medical Society of Paraplegia ( International Medical Society of Paraplegia for ) with Sir Ludwig Guttmann as president. In the first years annual scientific conferences found in Stoke Mandeville Hospital instead, except in each case in the Olympic year, when they took place in the context of the Paralympics. Today the meetings are in many different countries and in addition there are regional meetings.

Journal

SPINAL CORD ( spinal cord) is the monthly journal of the International Spinal Cord Society, a forum where physicians and basic scientists who are active in the field of spinal damage publish.

Society medal

Since 1975, the Society is awarded Medal for an outstanding contribution to the treatment or prevention of spinal cord injury or for an outstanding contribution to the study of spinal cord injury each year. Initially, only members of society were considered for the award, but now also suitable non-members can hope for a medal.
