International Standard Name Identifier

The 16 digits long International Standard Name Identifier ( ISNI ) identifies the public identity of people (public identity of parties ) that are involved in the production of a publication, these persons must not be authors. A natural person can have multiple identities and thus obtain different ISNI identifiers. It was developed by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 27729 and is available since 2012. On the homepage of ISNI are already assigned ISNI identifiers searchable.

What is meant by the identity of individuals, sets the standard not expressly state. At various identities of a natural person pseudonyms may include, however, justify pure spelling variations not a new identity.

The ISNI is also awarded for organizations. If organizations divided or merged, this constitutes a new identifier. In a pure modification of the tasks or the field of activity of the identifier is not changed.

The last digit of a ISNI identifier is a check digit.

ISNI do not want to replace the existing other identifier systems, but to make it more manageable by a bridge; extent resembles ISNI the Virtual International Authority File ( VIAF ), but is more comprehensive.

The structure of the ORCID identifiers is compatible with the International Standard ISO 27729th
