International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants

The International Union pour la protection of obtentions végétales ( UPOV) (French, German International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants ) is an intergovernmental organization for the protection of plant varieties. It has its headquarters in Geneva.

The UPOV was set up in 1961 by the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. The aim of the Convention is to the right of intellectual property to further develop so that it protects plant varieties and thus the development of new plant varieties favored. Membership requires the implementation of key elements of the Convention into national law.
