International Union of Geological Sciences

The International Union of Geological Sciences ( IUGS ​​) is an international geological society.

The IUGS ​​was founded in March 1961 in Paris. Membership is open to any geoscientist through membership in a national geoscience society. It sponsors and coordinates every four -yearly International Geological Congress. To encourage direct cooperation between scientists of different nations, founded the IUGS ​​International Geoscience 1972 Program ( IGCP ). Since 1972 572 single programs were financially supported.

The IUGS ​​is a member of the International Council for Science ( ICSU ).

The IUGS ​​and UNESCO launched the International Year of Planet Earth 2008.
