International Union of Pure and Applied Physics

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics ( IUPAP ) ( German: International Union of Pure and Applied Physics ) is an international non-governmental organization for the promotion and unification of physics with its headquarters in Switzerland. The first Annual General Meeting, which was founded in 1922, Union was held in Paris in 1923.

The objectives of the IUPAP are:

  • To promote international cooperation in the field of physics
  • To support adequate international conferences and to participate in organizing bodies
  • To accelerate the creation and publication of abstracts and compilations of physical constants
  • Advance global agreement on the use of symbols and units as well as the nomenclature and standards
  • To support the free exchange of scientists
  • To promote research and education

The IUPAP is headed by a General Meeting, which meets every three years. As the largest executive body of the organization monitors the activities of the 19 specialized international and three affiliated commissions. The Union shall be composed of members representing each physical communities. Germany is represented by the German Physical Society. Currently, the Union has 49 members.

The IUPAP is a member of the International Council for Science ( ICSU ).
