International Year of Biodiversity

The UN General Assembly has ( IJB ) declared the International Year of Biological diversity, or biodiversity, on 20 December 2006, 2010. With the coordination of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biodiversity CBD was commissioned.

Background

The United Nations General Assembly would like the IJB the importance of biological diversity, or biodiversity, as well as the consequences of their loss - a stronger focus on the political and public awareness - even for human welfare and global economic development.

Germany

As current chair of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity ( Convention on Biological Diversity - CBD) Germany will host the global launch event of the International Year of Biodiversity. On 10 January 2010, the International Youth Library was officially at an event with ao German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen and the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, Achim Steiner opened at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin.

Switzerland

Organizations from academia and government, non-governmental organizations, associations and companies involved in the International Year of biodiversity for conservation and for raising awareness on the importance of biodiversity and its ecosystem services. Are co-ordinated the activities of the Biodiversity Forum of the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN.
