Iodate

Iodates are salts of iodic acid with the anion IO3. All Iodates are strong oxidizing agents. They are stable and at the same time significantly weaker in their oxidation effect as bromate and chlorate. When mixed with combustible substances Iodates are sensitive to impact and explode easily.

In nature Iodates occur in Chile saltpetre and Tang and seaweed ash. Chilesalpeter contains up to 0.1% iodates. Today they are the most important technical basis for the iodine production.

" Iodized salt" contains sodium and potassium iodate for goiter prophylaxis. Iodate give with sulfite as reducing agent, the reaction Landoltsche time. Here, the deep blue starch-iodine complex is formed by a concentration-dependent reaction time.
