Iodine chloride (also iodine monochloride ) is an inter-halogen compound which is composed of the elements of iodine and chlorine.

Production and representation

Iodine chloride can be prepared from the elements or by boiling iodine in aqua regia.

Properties

Iodine chloride decomposes in water to form hydrochloric acid, iodic acid and iodine. The α - form pungent odor and is slightly hygroscopic, while the β - form is metastable.

Use

Iodine chloride can be used for iodination. With an acetic acid iodine chloride solution is also possible to determine the iodine value.

Safety

Iodine chloride is generally corrosive vapors / aerosols cause coughing, shortness of breath and mucous membrane irritation. The lowest known lethal dose in rats orally 50 mg / kg body weight, or 500 mg / kg in the absorption through the skin.
