At room temperature Diiodpentoxid, iodine and a chemical compound of the formula with oxygen I2O5 is a white crystalline powder.
Production and representation
Iodine ( V) oxide is prepared in two reaction steps. First elemental iodine with fuming nitric acid is made to react at 70-80 ° C. This results in iodic HIO3:
In the second step, the resulting iodic acid is dehydrated at 240-250 ° C:
Diiodpentoxid is also formed in a glow discharge from the elements. The first representation of Diiodpentoxid took place in 1813, both by Davy and by Gay -Lussac.
Chemical Properties
Diiodpentoxid forms molecular crystals of the formula O2I -O- IO2, which decompose at 275 ° C in the elements. The compound is a strong oxidizing agent, this property mainly determined uses.
Structure
The I- O-I angle is 139.2 ° in I2O5. The terminal I- O distances are from about 1.80 Å, the distances between the I- O bond bridging be about 1.95 Å.
Use
Diiodpentoxid is used for the quantitative determination of carbon monoxide in gas mixtures, eg in the unit and flue gas analysis, since it reacts quantitatively at room temperature with carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and elemental iodine.
The iodine formed can be determined by titration. In the organic chemistry Diiodpentoxid is sometimes used as an oxidizing agent, such as in the preparation of cyclic ketones.
