Iodothyronine deiodinase

Iodothyronine deiodinases constitute a subfamily of the deiodinases, play a crucial role in the activation and inactivation of Iodothyroninen, Thyronaminen and Iodothyroacetaten. Iodothyronine deiodinases are selenium- dependent enzymes.

Types

In most vertebrates, there are three iodothyronine deiodinases, two activating (5'- deiodinases ) and an inactivating (5- deiodinase ).

Mechanism

Deiodinases modify Iodothyronine, Thyronaminen and Iodothyroacetate by removing an iodine atom in each case on the inner ring (5- position) or outer ring (5'- position). Thus, thyroid hormones can be disabled or enabled.
