Ionian Bank

Ioniki Bank (Greek Ιονική Τράπεζα Ionikí Trapesa, Eng. Ionian Bank, Banca Italian Ionica ), was a commercial bank founded in 1839 with headquarters in London, which also functioned as the central bank of the Republic of the Ionian Islands. Branches, the Bank had on all the larger islands of the Ionian Islands, and later in the rest of Greece and the Middle East. Characteristic of the classical buildings of the bank was a portico with Ionic columns.

History

Once established only for business transactions between London and the Ionian Islands, the bank became the most important bank in the Ionian Islands and from 1845 in Greece. After the accession of the Ionian Islands to Greece, the Ionian Bank was allowed to expend their own banknotes in addition to the National Bank of Greece, this task was transferred to the Bank of Greece from 1920.

The seat was moved in 1873 to Athens 1975, the bank was nationalized in 1999 and privatized again. While the privatization of the bank was merged with the trapeza pisteos ( Bank ), the new bank now operates as Alpha Bank.
