Iorgu Iordan

Iorgu Jordan (born 29 Septemberjul / October 11 1888greg in Tecuci, .. † September 20, 1986 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian linguist, Rumänist and linguist.

Life and work

Jordan studied before the war in Iasi and Berlin, after the war in Bonn, Paris, Florence and Rome. He received his doctorate in 1919 at Alexandru Philippide ( 1859-1933 ) on Diftongarea lui e şi în o accentuaţi poziţiile ă, e ( Iasi 1920) and was a high school teacher in Iaşi and Galaţi. From 1926 to 1946 he was a professor at the University of Iaşi, 1946-1962 Professor of Romance Philology ( 1957-1958 also Rector ) of the University of Bucharest. He became politically active and was from 1945 to 1947 Romanian ambassador in Moscow. Jordan gave up the magazines Revue de linguistique (1956-1963) and limba română ( 1964-1986 ).

The Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, where he remained as a full member since 1945 and as Vice President, he was from 1957 to 1966, bears his name and that of Alexandru Rosetti ( 1895-1990 ). Jordan was honorary doctorate from the Humboldt University in Berlin, and the Universities of Montpellier, Gent and Rome. He belonged to several European academies.
