IPFire

IPFire is a free Linux distribution that acts as a router and a firewall in the first place and can be configured via a Webmanagementkonsole. In addition, the distribution still offers selected server services and can be easily extended to SOHO server.

IPFire is based on Linux From Scratch and is also like Endian Firewall originally a fork of IPCop, but since version 2 uses only the web interface of IPCop.

System

The modular design allows the user to create a customized system according to your needs. This can be either a very small system, which is also run on veteran hardware, such as an Intel Pentium of the first generation, or even just a SOHO system with a modern multi-processor system. Alternatively, the installation on a USB stick is possible.

Therefore, the time required for the IPFire computing power of your PC depends entirely upon application and the installed add-ons.

It requires at least one main processor with a clock speed of 333 megahertz, 128 megabytes of main memory and two network cards - one for the connection of DSL ( or other router) and one for connecting to the LAN.

Since version 2:13 Core 71 it is possible to alternatively connect to the Internet over a wireless connection, provided compatible hardware.

System Details

One of the basic concepts of this distribution is the ease of use which is tailored especially to users who are familiar with networks and server services little. However, the developers have ensured that experienced admins have varied settings.

IPFire offers a comprehensive package management system ( Pakfire ), thereby the slender held basic system that purely acts only as a firewall, are equipped with numerous extensions and you can adjust it so the different deployment scenarios. Finally, security issues can be resolved quickly by updating.

The Linux kernel was not taken from the fundus of the Linux Foundation, but hardened before and purifies.
