Ipoh is a city in Malaysia with 673 346 inhabitants ( 2005). It is the capital of the state of Perak, located in the district of Kinta.

Location and Geography

Ipoh is located about 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur on Kinta River. The valley around Ipoh is rich in tin. About a kilometer east of Ipoh, Kinta Valley, is Gua Tambun, a rock shelter, were discovered in the major rock art from the Neolithic period.

History

Ipoh grew mainly in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century quickly because of the rich tin deposits in the area. From this period dates the term "City of Millionaires". The city was hit hard by the late 1950s, the sharp fall in tin prices. Since then, many people have moved to other parts of Malaya or Malaysia, especially Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Almost 69 % of the population are ethnic Chinese Ipoh. Although most of the early settlers who came to Ipoh to work in the tin mines, Hakka were talking today more Chinese in Ipoh Cantonese. Even Mandarin Chinese is widespread.
