Ira Gitler

Ira Gitler ( born December 18, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York) is an American jazz critic, jazz journalist and jazz historian who, among other things for the jazz magazine "Down Beat" wrote.

Gitler grew up in the swing era, however, was mainly characterized by the emergence in the 1940s in New York bebop. He studied at the University of Missouri at Columbia University. Since its first liner notes for a 1951 Zoot Sims album at the prestigious record company (for which he worked from 1950 to 1955 ), he wrote the lyrics for hundreds of album covers. 1963-1964 and 1967-1970 he was the editor ( New York ) of the downbeat, but also wrote for Metronome, Jazz Times, the French Jazz Magazine, The New York Times, Village Voice, the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. In Internet age he wrote a column for "Jazz Central Station" and "CD now".

After 1966 he wrote a standard book on the history of bebop in jazz masters series, he published in 1985 an oral history tape to the development of bebop. From the 1970s he was also an employee of Leonard Feather in the update and updating of its jazz encyclopedia.

He is considered one of the most famous jazz critic and recipient of the 2002 Lifetime award of the New York jazz journalists.
