Irancy

Irancy is a commune in the French department Yonne ( Burgundy region) in the vicinity of the town of Auxerre. The municipality has 301 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011), has an area of 11.98 km ² and is situated at an altitude of 171 meters above sea level.

The Y at the end of the name suggests an origin of the Celtic- Roman style.

Population

Irancy one of the small communities of the department Yonne. Once the population has increased in the first half of the 20th century, a continuous shrinking of the population was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Germain, grows with Romanesque and classical elements. The acoustics for the performance of chamber music works is considered excellent.

Economy and infrastructure

Irancy is a predominantly by agriculture (viticulture and fruit growing ) embossed village. Today, there are a few establishments in the local small business sector. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

During the cultivation of cherries is declining, 251 hectares of the municipal area are planted with vines. The wine is marketed under the communal appellation Irancy, recognized since 6 November 1998. Here the rare grape variety Cesar is still drawn. The winery also have the right, regional appellations Bourgogne, Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Passe Tout Grain, Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire and Crémant de Bourgogne to use.

Sons and daughters of the town

  • Birthplace of Jacques- Germain Soufflot, architect. He studied in Rome, then in Lyon built the hospital and went to Italy in 1750 for the second time. After his return he began his major work, the church of St. Genevieve in Paris (now the Panthéon ), whose dome is one of the most famous in the world. He also built the sacristy and the treasury of Notre Dame in Paris.

  • Birthplace of René Lagrange, trade unionists at the beginning of the 20th century.
