History

Irchester is probably not a Roman, but an Anglo-Saxon name, the suffix "Chester" served as iron fortification ( Irish ceastre ). 973 the place is mentioned as Yraenceaster. In the Domesday Book the place is called 1086 as Irencestre. Later than Erncestre or Arnchester. During the 12th century, the name was to Erchester. Nevertheless, show the many archaeological finds from all periods in the small hamlet of Chester Farm (also: Chester House and Farm ) that there must be a former Roman settlement. Remains of a Romano Celtic temple are still preserved. The road through the Roman settlement presumably led by the then settlements in the District Duston Northampton to Thrapston.
