Irena VeisaitÄ—

Irena Veisaitė ( born January 9, 1928 in Kaunas) is a Lithuanian theater scholar.

Life

In the era of National Socialism Veisaitė was imprisoned in the ghetto of Kaunas. In 1963 she graduated in Leningrad on the late poetry of Heinrich Heine and was from 1953 to 1997 lecturer at the Pedagogical University in Vilnius. She was honored in 2012 for her contribution to the cultural exchange between Germany and their own country with the Goethe Medal. Veisaite is representative of the Soros Foundation in Vilnius and was director of the Thomas Mann Cultural Centre in Nida.

She's Holocaust survivors and campaigned throughout his life for a reconciliation and understanding.
